Most of Zheng Mengqiang's works are based on the emotions borne out of his experiences, experiences whence he can find inspiration out of personal memory and self-perception.
?
There is an exploration of poetic quality in his paintings. The original idea might come from the artist’s real life or from images of films; however, the way he deals with the instantaneous inspiration and emotion is quite restrained, which allows him to reorganize and refine the elements in the image after a long deliberation, creating an unrealistic but clear figure made of simplified shapes, clearly-defined color blocks which form an abstract and geometric composition. At the same time, a lot of refinements and simplifications are made within the choice of colors. The contrast among colors in his painting is faded, and the soft tones that are almost monochrome form a hazy mystery. This introverted and sensitive quality turn his works into examples of romantic realism.
Zheng Mengqiang tries to reproduce those memories that have disappeared in time but remain hidden in his sub-consciousness. Therefore, the characters, which normally act as the main body of the work, are often fixed in a frozen moment, revealing a sense of ambiguity as well as alienation, indicating signs of intimacy and vulnerability. The emotions in the paintings are so strong that they have their own dimension in the space; with a quiet and muted temperament, Zheng’s works depict the softness of human nature and the power of introspection.
Zheng Mengqiang, born in Fujian in 1987, graduted from the oil painting department of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 2011, and now lives and works in Beijing.
